Milwaukee American Association v. Landis case brief

Milwaukee American Association v. Landis case brief summary
49 F.2d 298 (1931)

CASE SYNOPSIS
Plaintiff baseball teams sought to enjoin defendant baseball commissioner from disapproving an optional contract between the teams assigning a then-existing agreement for intervenor player. The player sought to be relieved from his contractual relationship with both teams.

CASE FACTS
The original bill filed by one of the baseball teams sought to enjoin the commissioner of organized baseball from disapproving an optional contract between it and the other team assigning a then-existing agreement for the player. The commissioner answered that his action and what he proposed to do, if not enjoined, were clearly within his authority and in accord with the contracts and rules governing organized baseball. The player intervened, insisting that the commissioner was justified in his position and asserted that, because of the teams' actions, he should be relieved of his contractual relationships with them.

DISCUSSION
The court held that the commissioner acted clearly within his authority and denied the baseball teams' request for an injunction. The court also freed the player from the obligations of any contract with either team.

CONCLUSION
The court denied the baseball teams' request for injunctive relief and ordered that the player was freed from the obligations of any contract with either team.
